Methods of Teaching Special Education

Welcome to Methods of Teaching Special Education. This course will expose you to various issues surrounding students with cognitive impairments, emotional impairments, learning disabilities, and/or physical or other health impairments.

Special education law is designed to protect students with disabilities, prevent discrimination, and ensure free appropriate public education. The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) outlines the referral process, evaluation process, and eligibility process. It is your responsibility as an educator to understand your responsibilities under IDEA legislation, specifically three main expectations. The first expectation is to provide alternative methods of assessment for students with disabilities; the second is to arrange a learning environment that is as normal or as “least restrictive” as possible; and the third is to participate in creating individual educational plans for students with disabilities.

This course requires 30 hours of study time to complete all assignments and the reflection questions. There are seven written assignments including the reflection questions at the end of the course.
