Building on the foundational knowledge and screening practices introduced in E435A, this course emphasizes applying assessment data to design, differentiate, and evaluate instruction using High-Quality Instructional Materials (HQIM). It extends those frameworks to advanced literacy instruction by integrating writing, morphology, and family engagement to support comprehensive literacy development.
From Knowledge to Practice: Building Expert Literacy Instruction
In E435A, you built a foundation by learning how reading develops, how to diagnose difficulties with core frameworks, and how to teach the five pillars systematically. This course builds directly on that knowledge. We’ll briefly reactivate those frameworks and pillars to ensure they’re fresh in your mind, but our focus here is extension. You’ll apply the Science of Reading to advanced challenges: morphology and syntax, integrating writing, using data to target complex comprehension needs, and building literacy partnerships with families and communities.
The 435B course requires 37.5 hours of study time to complete all assignments and the reflection questions as directed. There are 13 written assignments that are included in the lessons in the course. Also, you will find a number of opportunities to respond to and reflect on the content that you have encountered as a part of your work in this course.
